Admissions

HOW TO GET ADMISSION

Parents of hearing-impaired children, and prospective hearing-impaired learners are invited to come for an assessment at the school - which usually takes place in the middle of the second academic term. Learners who meet the requirements of the assessment are then enrolled into the school.

Other hearing-impaired learners are referred to the school by the Zimbabwean Ministry of Education and Social Welfare after being assessed by educational psychologists.

Contact the school to find out the exact date of the next on-campus assessment.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER ADMISSION

Those admitted will be invited to join the school at the beginning of the following academic year. However, boarding facilities are primarily available for our hearing-impaired high school learners, with limited availability afforded to some of the hearing-impaired primary school learners.

TUITION & FEES

Parents are encouraged to be responsible for the school fees of their children. However, some assistance is offered by the government run Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM) to help with the tuition and boarding for the hearing-impaired learners in both our primary and high schools.

Since our primary school is mixed, (inclusive education), the hearing learners are expected to fully cover their tuition.

Academic Overview

CORE CURRICULUM

The core curriculum at the school for the deaf is the same as for any other school in the Zimbabwean education system as stipulated by the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC). The primary school learners complete their curriculum in 7 years as do other schools, but the high school learners complete their 'O' level curriculum in 6 years whereas other schools complete theirs in 4.

EXAMINATIONS

Our primary school learners are required to take ZIMSEC examinations in at least 5 subject examinations - namely Maths, English, Physical Education and Arts, Social Sciences, Agriculture Science and Technology. In addition to the 5 examinations, the hearing learners take the Shona exam. (The hearing-imparied learners do not study Shona since it is not available in sign language.)

Our high school learners sit down for ZIMSEC exams in English, Mathematics, Geography, Accounts, Science, Computers, Food Technology and Design, Textiles Technology and Design, Art and Woodwork Technology and Design.

The high school learners also register with the Higher Education Examination Council (HEXCO) which tests them for Carpentry and Joinery, Bookkeeping, Computer Word Processing, Bakery Studies, Garment Construction & Textile Technology, Business English, Business Calculations, and Stone Carving. We have found that our learners do very well in these examinations after which they earn a National Foundation Certificate.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Our school offers a number of extracurricular activities that aim to provide a wholistic and rounded education for our learners.

  • Voc-Tech Courses: These are practical courses that empower learners to find jobs, or employ themselves after high school, by teaching them resource utilisation, self reliance, and general problem solving. View our vocational and technical courses
  • Sports:
We offer a variety of sporting activities to promote physical fitness, health, & wellness. View our sporting activities

Sports & Clubs

Disability is not inability; being deaf does not stop the learners from participating in sports.

FIRST TERM

Athletics are the focus of our first term sporting activities. These includes track and field events such as sprinting, cross-country running, jumping (long, high & triple), and throwing (shot-put, discuss & javelin).

SECOND TERM

Ball games are the focus of our second term sporting activities. These include soccer, netball and volleyball.

THIRD TERM

Indoor games are the focus of our third term sporting activities.

COMPETITIONS

Since we are a member of the Catholic Secondary Schools Association (CASSA), we participate in the CASSA Sports Tournament that takes place each term.
Our learners also take part in Dominican Derbies where they compete with learners from other Dominican schools in various activities which include soccer, table tennis, netball and volleyball.
Such inter-schools events give our learners the opportunity to socialise with other learners from other schools.
